Take notes:  You will be allowed to use your notes on some tests. 

Note taking 101
Write headings
Write 1-2 sentences to tell what the article is about.
List facts that might be important. (What evidence does the author use to support their premise (idea)?)
Leave space on one side (maybe a third of the page to write notes that the teacher thinks are important about the article.)

You will all be required to do a project that will be due June 1, 2009

We will discuss the projects in class. REmember that the project must be an environmental project that you collect sample or test over a period of six weeks. You can sample water in ponds, creeks, etc for different types of algae, pH, turbidity. Look at particulate polutants in a specific place over a period of time and relate results to weather paterns. There are many ideas. Begin thinking and come up with an idea by

Week 1 ---March 9-13

Read chaper "Understanding our environment"

Take notes and answer questions 1-10 at the end of the chapter pay particular attention to the eight environmentalists discussed in the chapter. Know their accomplishments and their perspective on environmental management.

Write a summary of the Case Study and discuss why China is important to the study of Environmental science (3 pages typed 12 font, no pictures) You might need another resourse to help with this assignment.

Week 2 -- March 16-20

Read the chapter "Environmental Philosophy, ethics, and Science"

answer questions 1 - 10 at the end of the chapter.

Week 3 -- 23-30

Read the chapter 3 "Matter, Energy, and Life"

Assignment 2 answer the questions

Week 10-- May 18 - 22

Watch the movie An Inconvenient Truth and write a three page paper(12 font, single spaced, with an additional title page and bibliography (MLA ) discussing the evidence presented to support global warming, the global issues related to global warming including the effect on coastal cities, island nations, corral reefs, and artic mammals. Submit the paper to Turnitin.com Due May 22

Research and Answer questions on the handout (teacher will provide the handout)

Read chapter 15 "Air, Weather and Climate" and chapter 16 "Air Polution"

Write a 5 page paper (12 font, single spaced, with an additional title page and bibliography (MLA minimum 10 references - at least 5 scientific papers or books ) discussing our environment. Answer the following questions: What are superfund sites? How many are located in Lake County Indiana? What toxins are in our environment? How have they entered our environment? What can we do to minimize our exposure to the toxins?Submit paper to Turnitin.com Due May 29

Week 11 - May 25-29

Complete the "Water Polution" using Explore learning your class code is GM3FLLZUQK answer all of the questions in the exploration guide and take the 5 point quiz..

List at least 10 invasive species in Lake County IN. Choose one and make a poster to tell where it came from, how it got here, what is the level of threat to native species, how is it being controled? You will get 20 extra points for this assignment if you can find and bring to class one of the organisms that you are studying. 10 extra points for a photograph that you take of the organism. NOTE: no two students may do research on the same species so hand in the naname of your choice as soon as possible.

Week 12 June 1-5

Complete work and take practice exams found on the Glenco site. Email the exams for chapters 1-12 plus 15 and 16. to Khedges@khwisdom.com.
